The Liberty Theater Takes Over Eunice

The New Liberty Theatre is a place full of culture thriving out of Eunice, Louisiana in St. Landry Parish! “Southwest Louisiana’s Premier Temple of Amusement” was one of its first names in 1924. The theatre opened its doors in the City of Eunice and the surrounding areas. It was the place that was originally for community gatherings. During this time the theatre was the entertainment and performing arts focal point for the vicinity of the area. In addition to showing popular films, the owners also provided operas, plays, musical comedies and “high class vaudeville” to the public.
Many famous local stars have been in and out of the theatre. Those stars consisted of Fatty Arbuckle, the Bowery Boys, Lash LaRue and Tex Ritter.
The success from the theatre derived from the exceptional promotional activities created by the owner J. C. Keller Sr. Every year Keller filled downtown Eunice, Louisiana with excited theatregoers. The curious crowds were always eager to view the Liberty Theatre’s promotional tactics.
Today, the Liberty Theatre is now called the Liberty Center for the Performing Arts. The Center now hosts many live performances and is home to the famous Rendez-Vous de Cajun radio and television show.
