The Old Wooden Church

St. Gabriel Church

18th Century Church

St. Gabriel church is a roman catholic church located in the St. Gabriel perish. This church was built in 1769 by Father Dagobert. This church is considered to be one of the oldest, if not the oldest, standing wooden churches in the region. St. Gabriel church played a big role in shaping the religion in the region and was an important church for many Acadians who found a safe haven in southern Louisiana. This church has been dismantled and moved several times throughout its history, and the original location of the church is now in the Mississippi river. Although the church has been moved numerous times, the original French, colonial church structure still remains intact and gives the church a unique feature. This historic church is still standing and still hosts mass to continue to spread the catholic faith within the region.
